Concepts and Advances in Regenerative Medicine and Cell-Based Therapies
International Online Course

The Society for Worldwide Medical Exchange (SWME) is proud to organize an interactive and multidisciplinary international online course in Basic Science of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Therapy. This online course is designed to provide fundamentals in Basic Science of MSC and ensure access to the latest research advances. The course will be directed by a Scientific Committee of internationally renowned experts including Dr. Diego Correa, Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Orthopaedics and the Diabetes Research Institute & Cell Transplant Center, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and Dr. Arnold I. Caplan, Director of the Skeletal Research Center, Department of Biology, at Case Western Reserve University, considered “the father of the mesenchymal stem cell (MSC).” The course will also feature interactive sessions with special guests from other specialties working in clinical applications of MSC.

This online course is designed for healthcare professionals interested in these fields as well as for those already working in this area. There are currently over 5,200 registered clinical trials evaluating the use of Adult Stem Cells for countless diseases and medical conditions. By presenting, reviewing, and studying the rapidly evolving advances in the fields of Stem Cell Research, Stem Cell Therapy, and Regenerative Medicine, this course will provide a conceptual framework for the use of MSC as a therapeutic alternative.

Participate in this foundational course, composed of five modules, focused on aspects of basic science in Regenerative Medicine and Adult Mesenchymal Stem Cells. The self-paced online course format provides greater flexibility for busy professionals, allowing participants to navigate through the course and complete the activities when it is most convenient. There will also be a series of live online webinars where participants will be able to interact directly with Dr. Correa, Dr. Caplan, and other experts. Registration includes access to all educational materials and webinar events for 1 year. Upon completion of the course, all participants will receive a certificate of participation or achievement based on the Faculty's assessment criteria.

Course launch date: September 2017

This course is organized by The Society for Worldwide Medical Exchange with the endorsement of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Objective
Offer foundational concepts on the Biology and Physiology of MSC, and how these concepts serve as the basis for the development of clinical protocols in Regenerative Medicine. The course will provide the conceptual tools necessary for the subsequent development of clinical trainings in cell-based therapies with MSC.

Specific Objectives
The overall objective will be achieved through the review and study of:
  • The cellular and molecular foundation of Regenerative Medicine.
  • The Biology of MSC, contrasting it with other types of stem cells (e.g., HSC, iPS).
  • The use of MSC in Cellular Therapy, emphasizing their immunomodulatory and trophic properties.
  • The use of MSC in Tissue Engineering, thanks to their capacity for multipotent differentiation.
  • Ethical aspects/considerations and current regulations for cell-based therapy.
Methodology
The course is based on video presentations by the Faculty and provides relevant documents and journal articles for conceptual support as well as presentation slides for download. Additional features include discussions between Faculty and Guest Experts related to the application of MSC in their respective specialties and a series of interactive live webinars including Q&A sessions led by the Course Director. Through forum discussions, participants are able to interact with experts and colleagues to exchange ideas, share their experience, and build a collaborative community of international healthcare professionals working in the field.

Target Audience
  • Physicians specializing in areas such as: Orthopedics, Rheumatology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Internal Medicine and subspecialties, Neurology, Pediatrics, Maxillofacial Surgery, Endocrinology, Oncology, Dermatology, and Ophthalmology
